Welcome to Red Week! This week is going to be fantastic. As you can see from today’s star spangled front page, we picked up Dan Paskins (and yet another National Champion in playtesting partner John Ormerod) for this project. When I started work on the Championship Deck Challenge, I crossed my fingers and hoped that Dan would sign up for the inclusion of basic Mountain and here he is. Dan will be discussing his Red deck early next week, but today I’m here to give you the results of my testing – a fresh G/R deck that tried to bridge the gaps between beating Affinity and Tooth and Nail.

So I was talking to Mike Flores the other day, and Mike told me,”You know, the great thing about writing Magic Theory is that it immediately rules out all the dumb people from reading your articles.” I replied,”Well, Mike, the fact that they can’t talk never seems to hinder their ability to type ‘STFU n00b!’ in response to my theory articles.”

Josh is keen to avail himself of a free trip to Geneva, and has climbed off the Gravy Train in order to slum it on the PTQ circut with the rest of us. Or planning to ace a PTQ? Then maybe Josh can help…

Magic has a small number of fundamental rules: One land per turn, one attack phase per turn, a certain maximum power-to-mana ratio for creatures, and one card drawn per turn. Breaking this last rule – one card per turn – is one of the most basic yet most powerful strategies in the game.

“Card quality” is a mishmash of the possible interactions between all the resources in Magic – beyond just the cards and draw steps – and it’s used in so many different senses you can’t always be sure what the speaker means.”Card quality” has become a piece of Magic space-filling jargon, the way some people say”mise”,”barn”, and”f***” every other word and assume you understand whatever the hell they’re talking about.

Craig “The Professor” Jones was looking forward to Pro Tour: Yokohama. Constructed Magic… his strength. Of course, as you know, things didn’t quite go to plan for Mr Jones, and a healthy start to Day 1 sadly melted away under the harsh neon lights. In today’s From The Lab, Prof takes us through his preparation for the tournament, shares some of the more entertaining stories from the trip itself, and reveals the reason why White Weenie disappeared without trace…

I wouldn’t advise playing Weird Harvest in every deck… But when you luck out and get the strongest sealed you’ve ever seen with Rorix, Butcher Orgg, Starstorm, AND Slice And Dice, you know your critters will be better than theirs. So, what are you playing in the casual room? By “the casual room”, I quite literally mean Magic Online’s (henceforth referred to as MODO) casual room (henceforth referred to as “that den of whiners who seem to beat me all the time”). The New Players room and Tournament Practice Room are their own concerns – I, and others I know, spend most of our time tooling around in the casual room. Because we wanna have fun.

There are two sorts of multicolored cards in Ravnica. Yesterday we looked at the “traditional” two-color cards, where R&D forces us to choose both Red and White, both Black and Green. Today’s Guild mana is the opposite: though the cards are multicolored, both Green and White for a Selesnya card, let’s say, you can pick either color of mana to pay the cost. Guild mana is a completely new thing to Magic, but the question is: Are any of the new cards any good? [ White ] [ Blue ] [ Black ] [ Red ] [ Green ] [ Gold ]
